MPs * Embedded MP Conceptual Lesson Grade 1 · Unit 7 · Lesson 1

157-164

I will name,

- identify,
- and describe a plane shape.

They can have sides and vertices.

- a corner.

- closed,
- 6-sided shape with 6 vertices

Trapezoid: a flat,

- closed,
- 4-sided shape with 4 vertices

Teacher Resources Considerations: If needed,

review all basic shapes taught in kindergarten prior to teaching this lesson (triangle,

- square,
- rectangle,
- circle,
- and hexagon).

Consider giving the students a template to cut out all of the plane shapes to manipulate as they learn the attributes of plane shapes.

This template is provided at the end of this lesson

Half circle and quarter circle (semi-circle) are introduced in this lesson and used later in the unit to compose different plane shapes.

Application of MPs: MP1:

Circle: a flat,

- closed,
- 0-sided shape with no vertices.

A quarter circle is half of half of a circle.

How will you prove your answers

MP3: How does that drawing support your work

MP4: How can you relate this to something in real life

- trapezoid has four sides
- and 4 vertices

hexagon has six sides and six vertices

Answers will vary.

/ Directions: Identify and describe plane shapes.

State the objective: Today,

- identify,

and describe plane shapes including the square,

- rectangle,
- trapezoid and hexagon.

Model how to count and then record the 4 sides and 4 vertices of a trapezoid.

Compare the 3 shapes and explain that although they have the same number of sides and vertices,

- they are different.

A square and a rectangle have 4 straight sides that make right angles and a trapezoid has 2 slanted sides.

Compare the trapezoid to the hexagon by placing the trapezoid on top of the hexagon to show that the trapezoid covers one half of the hexagon.

Describe a circle,

- half circle,
- and quarter circle.

Restate the objective: Today,

I will name,

- identify,
- and describe a plane shape.

- without any straight sides.

Therefore,

- a circle has 0 sides.

Mention that since a vertex is where 2 lines meet,

- a circle has 0 vertices.

Model drawing a line down the middle of a circle to make two half circles,

- or semi-circles.

Model drawing another line to divide the semi-circles in half to show quarter circles.

/ Directions: Identify and describe plane shapes.

Direct the students to trace the trapezoid and then label and record the number of sides and vertices.

- 4 sides 4 vertices

Direct the students to trace the hexagon and then label and record the number of sides and vertices.

- 6 sides 6 vertices

Divide the circle into halves.

Then divide the circle into quarter circles.

Which shape is a trapezoid

- ? How do you know
- ? Which shape is a hexagon
- ? How do you know

Recap today’s lesson with one or more of the following MP questions: MP1: How did you prove your answers

? MP3: How does that drawing support your work

? MP4: How can you relate this to something in real life
